End-to-end Analysis of Packet Inter-arrival Times of CBR Flows

چکیده

In this paper, we develop a simple model for the end-to-end analysis of packet inter-arrival times of CBR flows in differentiated services networks. Our model illustrates that at high network utilization levels: (1) the packet inter-arrival times of CBR flows becomes heavy-tailed once the flows traverse through a large number of hops, and (2) the aggregate of such CBR flows is self-similar, long-rage dependent Fractional Brownian Motion (FBM). We validate our model through simulations and examine the region of applicability—with respect to network utilization, heterogeneity of CBR flows, and number of hops that a CBR flow traverses—of our model. We find that although the model predicts the behavior of CBR flows in the asymptotic case, for flows that contribute significant amount ( 10%) to the cumulative bit rate of the CBR aggregate, the observations yielded by the model hold at relatively low levels of network utilization (40-50%), small number of network hops (6-8), and moderate levels of heterogeneity in the packet sizes and bandwidth requirements of the CBR flows.

End-to-end Model for a Flow in the Internet

We develop an end-to-end model for packet inter-arrival times of flows in the Internet. Our model illustrates that under asymptotic conditions of high network utilization, (1) packet inter-arrival times of flows become heavy-tailed after they traverse a large number of hops, and (2) the aggregate of such flows is a long-range dependent self-similar process. We validate our model through extensi...

Measurement and Analysis of Intraflow Performance Characteristics of Wireless Traffic

It is by now widely accepted that the arrival process of aggregate network traffic exhibits self-similar characteristics which result in the preservation of traffic burstiness (high variability) over a wide range of timescales. This behaviour has been structurally linked to the presence of heavy-tailed, infinite variance phenomena at the level of individual network connections, file sizes, tran...

Router Mechanisms to Support End-to-End Congestion Control

This paper considers the potential negative impacts from an increasing deployment of non-congestion-controlled besteffort traffic on the Internet. These negative impacts range from extreme unfairness against competing TCP traffic to the potential for congestion collapse. To promote the inclusion of end-to-end congestion control for best-effort traffic, we propose lightweight router mechanisms f...

On the capabilities of application level traffic measurements to differentiate and classify Internet traffic

The use of network based traffic classification to differentiate aggregate traffic has been introduced with the development of new Internet service architectures, especially with the Differentiated Services. We present measurements and analysis of various packet and flow statistics to aid in classifying or differentiating traffic flows according to the application nature. Our study on methods t...

Estimation of RTT and Bandwidth for Congestion Control Applications in Communication Networks

Heterogeneous communication networks with their variety of application demands, uncertain time-varying traffic load, and mixture of wired and wireless links pose several challenging problem in modeling and control. In this paper we focus on the round-trip time (RTT), which is a particularly important variable for efficient end-to-end congestion control, and on bandwidth estimation. Based on a s...
